A research-intensive university, committed to structure the European higher education area
University of Rennes is a research-intensive university, willing to fully take part in the major challenges of innovation and knowledge of our century. Its expertise in research and its relations with the economic sector have made University Rennes 1 renowned on an international scale.
The University of Rennes, whose roots go back to the 15th century, considers research and its development as a priority, as a distinctive brand that makes its reputation internationally and with companies. The university relies on a culture of high standards, openness and innovation, embodied by quality training that leads its students to successful professional integration.
The University of Rennes has 30 units, 4 federative structures and 44 research platforms labelled in 5 Research Poles: Biology-Health, Environment, Materials, Mathematics-Digital, Human, Organisational and Social Sciences, located on several campus in Rennes.
University of Rennes is the coordinating institution of the MamaSELF consortium since 2007. The Mamaself lectures are given on the Campus Beaulieu, situated in the city, in a very green environnement.
Faculty of Science and Properties of Matter
The activities within Master Mamaself are mainly conducted in the Faculty of Science and Properties of Matter (SPM), of the 19 research components of the University of Rennes, hosting the global training offer articulated around three themes: Physics, Chemistry and Mechanics in Engineering Sciences.
The Mamaself program at University of Rennes is conducted by teachers and researchers from the research institutions in Physics and Chemistry, which offers many opportunities of internship and master-thesis placement.
The research at Institute of Chemical Science (ISCR) focuses on :
• on materials for sustainable development: eco-materials and eco-processes
• on materials for the conversion of energy
• around molecules and materials for health.
The ISCR is structured in eight disciplinary teams working transversally, with increased visibility and recognition at national and international level.
Resolutely present on the international stage, the Institut des Sciences Chimiques de Rennes is the home of seven International Associated Laboratories (LIAs), with partners of excellence in Germany, Russia, Japan, China, India, Chile, and Australia. It welcomes more than two hundred people from all over the world.
The Institute of Physic of Rennes (IPR) is a research unit in fundamental and applied physics, a driving force in a number of interdisciplinary research partnerships at the interface with chemistry, engineering, biology and environmental sciences.
One of IPR's major strengths lies in the interweaving of research projects and the development of technical and technological know-how.
Following departments particularly fit the MaMaSELF programme through their teaching involvement and research activities mixing intensive use of large-scale facilities, in-house experimental development, and theoretical or numerical approaches.
• Main scientific goal of Materials and light department is to focus on the understanding and control of the properties of materials, specifically photoinduced phenomena in molecular materials, through the study of their structure and electronic states by diffraction and ultra-fast optical techniques
• Nanoscience department carries out projects focusing on the control of the properties and the functions of a materials at the ultra-small scale (nanometer), at surfaces and interfaces, or in nanoconfined materials
• Soft Matter group works on a wide range of soft materials: granular media, foams, emulsions, bubbles and drops, biological tissues, membranes, proteins. The experimental techniques used are related to optics, mechanics, physical chemistry and biology.
• Molecular Physics brings together theorists and experimentalists working on the structure and dynamics of atomic and molecular systems, and their interaction with light. The department focuses on fundamental as well as applications in domains such as astrophysics, atmospheric, environmental or industrial physics.
Rennes lives to the rhythm of its 67,000 students!
History lives on in Rennes the capital of Brittany and you will enjoy the center from the 18th century, the suburbs from the 16th and 18th century, the medieval area with all the restaurants and cafés… Rennes is also a cultural capital: a large number of well-known artistic events shows its dynamism. Let yourself be surprised by Rennes, a place of confluence where the historical heritage is revisited by urban culture. From Rennes you are one hour from the sea! One hour from the famous Mont Saint Michel ! One and a half hour from Paris !
In Rennes you can practice any sport: The sport activities offered by University Rennes 1 belongs to the largest sport offer in France, including all nautical activities on the river and by the sea.
Rennes is considered as the 2nd best student city in France, according to yearly students survey. The 2021 edition of the ranking of cities where it is good to study places Rennes, second again! The capital of Brittany is distinguished by the density of training possibilities and its environmental efforts. Many parcs are awaiting the students who come there like at the Thabor parc to settle, meet and study outdoors.
University of Rennes
Université de Rennes1, is the biggest component of the University of Rennes, the other members being the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en santé Publique (EHESP), the Ecole Normale Supérieure Rennes (ENS Rennes), the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Rennes (ENSCR), and the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Rennes (INSA Rennes). University of Rennes hosts, on 9 campuses, more than 37000 students, 4500 staff members, 1350 PhD students. Research at University of Rennes is conducted in 38 research laboratories within 7 pluridisciplinary strategic domains: Strategic materials, Digital and civic society, Natural resources and sustainable ecosystems ,Smart territories and sustainable networks, Health: from the molecule to the population, Digital and technologies for health, Public Policy. Research labs are afiliated to the national research agencies CNRS, INSERM, INRIA, INRAE, and universitary hospital CHU Rennes. University of Rennes and its associated partners (Université Rennes 2, ENSAI, AGRO Rennes) represent more than 61000 students making Rennes one of the most student-oriented urban areas in France.
