History
Located in the South of France on the Mediterranean Sea, the Université de Montpellier (UM) committed itself since more than 800 years of its existence, towards scientific and societal challenges. UM is a research-intensive university where education and research cover most of the Scientific and Technological fields. It is also one of the largest French universities, presently enrolling more than 50,000 students and 4,800 staff.
Research at UM is structured in 74 laboratories most of which are in partnership with well-recognized French research organizations such as CNRS, INSERM, IRD, INRA or CIRAD.
Having considerable experience in the implementation and management of European programs (Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe and Erasmus+) UM is currently involved in 4 Erasmus Mundus projects. Being internationally recognised for the excellence of its training, research, and innovation capacity in a wide range of scientific fields, UM is occupying a leading position in international rankings. The University of Montpellier is placed among the top 200 of the general Shanghai ranking and, number one out of all French universities for the most innovative one in the Reuters ranking. It is also on the world podium in ecology in the Shanghai thematic ranking. Presently 1,800 PhD students are registered at UM in totally 9 Doctoral School while 50% of these early-stage researchers come from abroad.
Institut Charles Gerhardt Montpellier
The Institute of olecular Chemistry and materials science, Institut Charles Gerhardt Montpellier (ICGM) was founded in 2007. It is part of the Chemistry Balard Research Pool, being with 700 staff members the biggest Chemistry Institute in Europe. ICGM is a center of excellence in research, education and technology transfer, in the fields of material and molecular chemistry. Researchers with expertise in chemistry, physics, biomolecules and pharmaceutics are organized in four departments, renowned in the fields of energy generation and storage, solid state chemistry, materials science, catalysis, theory, and modeling as well as inorganic, molecular, and macromolecular synthesis.
International
University of Montpellier welcomes 2332 international students coming from all over the world and especially from Europe and the mediterranean countries. Further more the University of Montpellier appears in the prestigious Shangaï ranking and is situated among the ten best French Universities.
The University of Montpellier is strongly involved in a variety of international projects in different frameworks. UM2 has also a huge experience in the Erasmus programme. This implies an operating infrastructure for welcome service offered to foreign students . UM2 has put the development of Erasmus Mundus and related programmes as one of the highest priorities of the university.
New campus
Located between the Faculty of Science and the CNRS, this brand new campus of some 35,000 m2 is frequented by nearly 900 students, 260 of them in thesis, and nearly 500 researchers and teachers. This is where Mamaself students will study from now on!
